After School

912 West Chatham Street, Cary, NC

After-School Program

Begun in January of 2001, our homework assistance program is intended to provide a supervised, quiet environment where K- 2 students can do their daily homework, and/or obtain customized tutoring assistance from highly experienced professional teachers.  The program is held at Community of Christ, 912 W. Chatham, Cary, Nc 27511.  It is intended primarily for residents of the immediate Chatham Street neighborhood.

Our Vision:
*Provide one-on-one attention to the academic development of children by assisting with homework.
*Give children a sense of belonging through interpersonal relationships
*Celebrate achievement through recognition and rewards
*Challenge our children's performance level to greater success academically and personally
*Instill a message of personal worth and hope that penetrates into every aspect of their life.

Our Mission:
“Providing children with a place to find the love, encouragement, and direction they need to bring hope to their dreams.”

History of the Program:
As a veteran teacher of 30 years with a Master's Degree in Reading, Carol Gibson wanted to start a program for children as she was nearing retirement.  With the help of Otis Hardy, a former prisoner who lived at Chatham Forest, the church hosted a picnic at the apartments in the summer of 2000 (the first of 8 annual picnics we have co-hosted with the apartment manager.  With her support we were able to become acquainted with the residents there.  One resident, Michelle Love, and I were Co-Directors of the After School that first year.   We started our program with 10 to 12 students. This fall we have 40 students enrolled, with an average weekly attendance of 25 students.  We meet on Wednesdays for two sessions and then provide dinner for those who want to stay. (see After-School Tutoring Program flyer – attached)

Successes:
Last year we served a total of 39 students with attendance ranging between 20 and 25 students each week during the second semester.  During the 2006-2007 School Year, 100 per cent of our children passed the End of Grade tests with either a 3 or a 4 and all of our older students passed the End of Course Tests (EOC's).  Effective rewards are also in place with perks of Barnes and Noble gift certificates, other gifts and prizes, and – this summer – a trip to the State Fair.  Points accumulate for diligent work and good grades.  (only A's, B's, 3's and 4's are rewarded)
